Here is sit pretty – My challenge is to get Trooper to not stand up on his hind legs. Any suggestions? https://vimeo.com/288440105/f531b008cf
Ahh, yes I see. The biggest issue here is tyhat you really want to shape this behavior, not lure. That will help a lot. At this point there is NO VERBAL for the behavior so dont say anything to him at all. You are just clicking and rewarding when he does anything that is moving in the right direction. Right now I would be looking for front foot lifts (especially jackpot is he lifts both). Reward placement – right at his chest, not too high up to discourage standing. One other option is for you to shape it using a… Read more »
Ok… No lure – I think I can shape him with this. Thinking about it he actually does do paw lifts. Let me see how this continues in the next coming days. Thank you again for the feedbacks!
I will leave the suggestions to Jordan – but wow Trooper is a cutie!!!
We have been working on sit pretty for awhile but i`ve never been able to do it without him keeping his paws on me.
Today, i changed position and its better but i just read your earlier response about shaping it instead of luring. Should i change my approach?
Yes, a bit too much luring. I really dont like luring this trick at all because it teaches the dogs to sit back on their spine rather than hold themselves up in the air with their muscles/core. So to work on the FF challenge… I would put cookies in both hands. Wait for him to offer the behavior and reward from one hand then switch to the other then back and so on. This way he will be anticipating the hand change and looking to the next hand. You can slowly add all your duration that way by just gradually… Read more »
So, im not sure i understand. Just wait for him to lift one or both front paws? I dont think he will offer to lift up.
What is the FF challenge?
You can reward for one paw (either) and of course jackpot if at any time he offers both. But try to get away from luring the behavior and try to let him offer it more. It will seem like less success but reward all the small behavior (one foot, two foot, lifting etc..) and he will figure out a more deliberate behavior in the end.
The FF challenge is just me reffering to the challenge of him putting his front feet on you instead of holding them on his own
Thanks Jordan. We worked again last night and I chose to use a target (just a small square of a yoga mat). That seemed to work very well with all of my dogs. As long as I am standing up – they will offer to use their paws to a target instead of their nose. With ICE (the Dutch Shepherd) I still need to have my position next to him not in front of him. I am sure that will fade as he gets better but for now he can’t stop himself from using me as a platform. LOL Any… Read more »
Any suggestions or critque would be appreciated.
YES looking great. I think this was the way to go for your boys as well. Offer the target closer to his chest so that he is less likely to stand up. Make sure to ask him to sit first to help encourage that more. To me it doesn’t matter too much if he does the trick in front of you or in heel position. Every once in a while ask him to sit in front of you and offer the target and see what he does.. If he offers the behavior then JP if not then just ask him… Read more »
Oh and as soon as you are fading the target try the two hands of cookies exercise.. I think that will help him a lot with not using you as a platform. He just needs those few steps/understanding before
Hi @Jordan Biggs,
I must admit I wasn’t able to get Judge to do this so had started to lure. Love the idea of the foot target and did a small session today with some small success. Will continue to work this and fade the target.
Yes, a bit too much luring. I really dont like luring this trick at all because it teaches the dogs to sit back on their spine rather than hold themselves up in the air with their muscles/core WOW you guys got a lot of success. Just reward a lot and same as with the wave, try to get that reward chain going anytime that you might be able to (even the smallest bit). and dont forget about your JACKPOT. He did a couple in this session that needed to be a JP and you rewarded but did not JP. If… Read more »
@Jordan Biggs. Here is his third short session of shaping this trick. His duration is getting a little stronger but don’t want to do too much with this young guy.
Awesome!! Very nice. I agree. Keep sessions short and semi frequent (like 3 short sessions a week to keep building but not moving too quickly). It is hard to get that second reward in sometimes. One thing that might help is holding a handful of cookies in both hands and switching between hands while you are rewarding. This way you can start to get that second reward to him sooner (even before the other reward is gone) and build up the time between those hand changes to build more duration and get him to understand holding the position for additional… Read more »
Hi @Jordan Biggs What do you think of Judge’s sit pretty, do I need to change anything?
Trouble uploading my sit pretty video…I’ll do that later.
But one problem that I have noticed is getting this skill at a distance. …I take it I should just gradually increase distance at small steps?
Second question: should I treat while she is in “sit pretty” and/or should I say “break” to get her out of sit pretty.
Try to get the multiple rewards while she is holding the behavior. That will really put a lot more value into the position. And that should help with adding more distance as well. Focusing on duration in general will help with the duration. Typically to add more distance I would use a platform or a “place” of some kind and give her that space to do the behavior in. It is usually easier when she has better duration, so definitely focus on that first. You can also add more duration (and the multiple treats in position) by putting treats in… Read more »
